Boston + Beating Cancer
Organized by: Emily Bobel
EVENT DATE Apr 21, 2014
My father, Phil Bobel, was diagnosed with cancer this past October. He's been through radiation, chemotherapy, acupuncture and lots of Ben and Jerry's ice cream. While we recently learned that he's in remission (which has been the best news of 2014!), I know the road ahead is still uncertain.
In celebration of this milestone and to honor my father's courage, I am running the Boston marathon a week from today. I hope to demostrate an ounce of the strength my dad has shown me, share his story and raise money to support causes near and dear to our family.
My goal is to raise $5,000 in one week - yes, ONE WEEK! Funds raised will go to support 3 incredible organizations:
1. The Ron Burton Training Village, which is a fantastic leadership development program for at-risk kids. I have the great fortune of running with these fearless students!
2. Camp Phoenix, which is a great organization I sit on the board for. We send 50 at-risk kiddos from Oakland to a 5-week summer camp and witness the transformational learning experiences they have as a result.
3. New School San Francisco, (which does not yet have a webiste) and is the K12 public charter school I am working to launch in the fall of 2015. It will take a village to make this dream a reality and I appreciate all the help I can get!
My father is a role model for me and hundreds of other children and adults that he has coached, taught, mentored and inspired over the years. His kindness, selflessness, commitment to justice and care for the environment is rare - he is ,without a doubt, the most expectional man I know. My hope is to bring a huge smile to his face and to all the kiddos we will support at Ron Burton Village, Camp Pheonix and my school!
Thank you. And onward.
