BENEFITING: BOSTON DEBATE LEAGUE
ORGANIZER: BOSTON DEBATE LEAGUE
EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
The Boston Debate League is an organization whose mission seeks to build up our youth by equipping them with the tools to become strong debaters and future leaders.
I am running the Boston Marathon for this organization because I believe that change is most influential at the community level. As a volunteer judge at a BDL tournament, I have seen first hand how debate empowers students and challenges them in ways they may not experience otherwise. These students spend many long hours practicing, researching, and preparing. They spend their weekends at tournaments debating predetermined topics tirelessly and relentlessly. They have spirit, grit and determination. They push themselves to their limits and keep going to make their points, challenge their fellow debaters and try to make a more compelling case. They debate both sides of an issue, which allows them to experience first hand how a case, while decided on the merits of an argument, is not always cut and dry. They see how facts and perspective play into their narrative, listening to and analyzing the details to understand both sides of the issue.
Either side of an issue can win in these debates, which supports my belief that often times conversation and compassion go a long way in creating understanding and appreciation among opposing ideas. In a world so divisive, I believe there is power in good communication and leadership, which is needed in order to bring people together. The Boston Debate League is empowering future leaders to do just that.
It is for all of these reasons that I am proudly running the Boston Marathon this April for the Boston Debate League. I hope you will join me in supporting the work this organization is doing to build up our future leaders and communities within the city of Boston. Please consider making a donation to help me reach my $5,000 fundraising goal.
