EVENT: 2012 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 16, 2012
Before I head off to Colorado to teach, I will be running in the Boston Marathon on April 16, 2012. This is a race that has been on my bucket list ever since I put on my first pair of running shoes in 6th grade. I have run two qualifying times in marathons prior to this. My first effort was in Toronto in 2009 and my second was in the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington D.C. in 2010. Knowing that I might not be this close in proximity to Boston, I decided what better way to leave college than to run the Boston Marathon. I will be training all winter with the goal to set a new PR on this historic course. My first two marathons were run on with my best friend and we ran those for our own personal enjoyment. This year, I decided I wanted to do something more. As of November, I have joined The Hall Steps Foundation. Started in 2009 by professional runners Ryan and Sara Hall, The Hall Steps Foundation has committed its time, money, and efforts to fight global poverty through better health. Tonight, over 1 billion people will go to bed hungry and 50 million of them are right here in the United States. The Hall Steps Foundation has raised money for efforts in Africa but also has started wellness programs in low-income areas to work with children and their families to teach them about proper diets and exercise. What is particularly great about this foundation is that its participants all sign up to run marathons and join a "Steps Team." Through my training for the marathon I will be increasing my own health and wellness by raising money for those who need that help.
