EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 20, 2015
Moving to Boston in 2011 started my running journey. Throughout high school and college I would have never thought I would be a runner as endurance was never my strong suit. That summer, I decided to challenge myself with something new and sign up for the Salem Wicked Half Marathon. The 12 weeks of training and the actual race in September 2011 changed my whole perspective on distance running.
Running became my way of getting through the stress of my graduate studies and a way to take time for myself. I ran another half marathon in February 2013 and was convinced that half marathons were enough of a challenge for me, even though the aspiration of running the Boston Marathon was always in the back of my mind.
April 15, 2013, the day of the Marathon bombings, is a day I and many others will never forget. Just prior to the bombings, I stood amazed at the 26 mile mark at the runners who were approaching the finish line, and I felt inspired to complete the Boston Marathon before leaving Boston. After the explosions occurred, that inspiration was briefly replaced by fear but then quickly overcome by pride in the city that I now call home. The bravery that Boston demonstrated is my driving force to achieve the goal of 26.2.
Sadly, I did not know enough about the Boston charity teams for 2014 and how to apply so another marathon went by for which I was a spectator. However, that year of not participating opened the door for me to find a charity I am truly passionate about – and that charity is the hospital I currently work at as a clinical social worker.
To me, Boston Medical Center (BMC) is not only a world class hospital. It is an opportunity to serve an underserved population, with whom I have been able to grow close to and learn from in my every day job. I primarily work with patients in the inpatient setting on the family medicine and surgery floors but I have been trained to work in various settings across the hospital. I have seen firsthand the care that patients get from the multidisciplinary teams within the hospital and I am amazed every day at the commitment of the staff, especially the doctors and nurses.
While training for my most recent half marathon in October 2014, I felt even more compelled to apply to run the Boston Marathon as it is my last year in Boston before the Air Force takes Rob and I to a new “home”. Boston has so many charity teams, but my heart kept drawing me to the team that I work for everyday and a cause that I know firsthand will benefit from all the support and fundraising.
Please support me in my training by supporting Boston Medical Center. Your donation will directly impact underserved individuals affected by the horrors of trauma, and will brighten the future of the city that has inspired myself and many others to remain strong in the face of adversity.
26.2 MILES TO A NEW BMC!
For the past 12 years, Boston Medical Center has proudly participated in Boston’s historic Marathon, raising more than $2.16 million for the hospital. In 2014, BMC was fortunate to have our biggest team in history, comprised of 107 runners and led by honorary team captain, actor Kevin Spacey. But the true stars last year were our runners who pounded the pavement, crossed the finish line and helped raise more than $1.1 million, in honor of the victims and marathon survivors of 2013. We are grateful to John Hancock Financial and the Boston Athletic Association for making Team BMC possible and for recognizing the unique role BMC plays in keeping our city strong.
This year, philanthropic efforts from Team BMC will be dedicated to our Building the New BMC campaign which will include construction of a new, state-of-the-art Emergency Department for our region. Boston Medical Center has the busiest Emergency and Trauma Center in New England with 130,000 patients per year—more than two-thirds of Boston’s major trauma cases annually. Understanding that trauma does not discriminate and anyone may need our services in a moment’s time, Team BMC stands committed to ensuring Boston Medical Center remains one of the very best trauma centers in the country. By donating to Team BMC you are showing support for the entire city of Boston.
Thank you for supporting Boston Medical Center in our mission to provide exceptional care, without exception every day!
