EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 20, 2015
This April I will be fulfilling a dream that I've long had, but is now suddenly attainable - running the Boston Marathon. I'll be running in support of the Boston Medical Center (BMC) and the incredible work that they do providing care regardless of ability to pay. Your donations will empower them make an even stronger impact they have on the lives of many people in the Boston area, and your contribution also means a lot to me. Thank you for your support, I really appreciate it! I can’t do this without you.
Below you can read more about why I'm running the marathon, why I support the BMC, and a few words from the BMC.
Why I'm running the Boston Marathon:
Throughout my childhood, I was never a runner – 6 laps around the tennis court at the start of practice was the most I’d ever run. However, five years ago, something changed and I decided to try running. At first it took just ¾ of a mile at a very slow pace to exhaust me. But I kept running, and set a goal of being able to run a 5k on my own. That goal grew to a 10k. As I ran and my distances increased, I realized that running empowers me and has given me a lot of strength and encouragement since the day I started.
Three years ago while at school in the Boston area, I went and cheered runners on at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. I was amazed by the support and community created by Boston that came out so strongly during the marathon. This inspiring mentality came through even more strongly as Boston bonded together through the tragic event the following year. I remember seeing a Tweet that stuck with me, posted by “Batman” – “When Gotham needs a hero, it turns to Batman. When Boston needs a hero, it turns to the person standing next to them.” I want to run here, in Boston, to give back to the city which meant so much to me and whose community I feel honored to belong to. It was here, watching the Boston Marathon, that for the first time in my life I began to think that maybe, just maybe, I could run a marathon. I’m delighted to have the chance to run this race that first inspired me to think big with my running.
Why I support the BMC:
The BMC’s mission (paraphrased) is to provide exceptional care to all patients without regard for their status or ability to pay. After looking further into the BMC, I realized that this mission covers many medical specialties, and that over half of BMC patients have an income under $21,000. The treatment they provide makes an incredible difference to the lives of their patients, and thus to the entire community. I support the BMC and run with Team BMC because I want to help enable people to get the care that they need, and I believe strongly in the work that the BMC does. I hope you will join me in this effort.
Note from the BMC (In their words):
26.2 MILES TO A NEW BMC!
For the past 12 years, Boston Medical Center has proudly participated in Boston’s historic Marathon, raising more than $2.16 million for the hospital. In 2014, BMC was fortunate to have our biggest team in history, comprised of 107 runners and led by honorary team captain, actor Kevin Spacey. But the true stars last year were our runners who pounded the pavement, crossed the finish line and helped raise more than $1.1 million, in honor of the victims and marathon survivors of 2013. We are grateful to John Hancock Financial and the Boston Athletic Association for making Team BMC possible and for recognizing the unique role BMC plays in keeping our city strong.
This year, philanthropic efforts from Team BMC will be dedicated to our Building the New BMC campaign which will include construction of a new, state-of-the-art Emergency Department for our region. Boston Medical Center has the busiest Emergency and Trauma Center in New England with 130,000 patients per year—more than two-thirds of Boston’s major trauma cases annually. Understanding that trauma does not discriminate and anyone may need our services in a moment’s time, Team BMC stands committed to ensuring Boston Medical Center remains one of the very best trauma centers in the country. By donating to Team BMC you are showing support for the entire city of Boston.
Thank you for supporting Boston Medical Center in our mission to provide exceptional care, without exception every day!
