BENEFITING: Boston Medical Center
ORGANIZER: Boston Medical Center
EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
On April 15, 2013, JP Craven, from Hingham, MA, was standing 12 feet from the first bomb, waiting for his father, Joe Craven, to cross the finish line. JP was knocked unconscious, with shrapnel hitting him throughout, but especially the right side of his face. The heat of the blast set his clothes on fire and severely damaged his right ear - and the blast permanently took away some of his hearing. Thankfully, JP was taken to Boston Medical Center where the great doctors and nurses did amazing work that night, extracting the shrapnel which nearly pierced his skull. After several more surgergies, he was released the following Saturday. Over the course of the year, with the support of so many - including St. Sebastian's School, the people of Hingham, and his Davidson College baseball teammates, JP recovered well and testified at the sentencing last year. We obviously feel very fortunate.
JP's Team was formed in 2014 to support the great work of Boston Medical Center - and had 8 runners participate - including JP himself, his father and his sister, Deirdre - raising over $170,000. So, we decided to do it again in 2015 and 2016, with many new and repeat runners. Over the three years, JP's Team and its runners have raised over $750,000 for Boston Medical Center, the hospital that was there for JP back in 2013.
We are gearing up to do this again - with 20 runners putting on the BMC/JP's Team jersey - and putting in the time and effort training and fundraising. Needless to say, we need your help again because Boston Medical Center is the glue that keeps the City of Boston going. It is Boston's only public hospital - it is Our Hospital - and provides Exceptional Care, Without Exception to many who are underserved and the community as a whole. Please join with us - and root for us on April 17th. Thank you.
