BENEFITING: Boston Medical Center
ORGANIZER: Boston Medical Center
EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
Friends and Colleagues,
On April 17, I will run in the 121st Boston Marathon. For runners, the Boston Marathon is the “super bowl” of running. As most of you know, I’ve been an avid runner for the past 16 years.
You might be thinking “Why am I signing up to run 26.2 miles and the commitment that goes into proper training given my current workload – managing a busy household, raising four young children, volunteering and working full time?” I am running for two reasons. First, Boston has been a dream of mine ever since I started running. Secondly, I have the inspiring opportunity to raise funds for the Boston Medical Center (BMC).
There are only two ways in which a runner can enter the Boston Marathon. A runner can either qualify with a Boston Qualifier time, or a runner can run for a cause. I am honored to have been selected by BlackRock to run on Team BMC with 80 other runners from across the country. Not only do I get the chance to run, but I also get to be part of a larger team raising funds which will make a meaningful impact for BMC. BMC is a private, not-for-profit academic medical center. BMC is the busiest provider of trauma and emergency services in the region, providing exceptional care to every patient who walks through its doors.
I was forever moved by the 2013 Boston marathon, personally witnessing the amazing strength and resilience of the Boston citizens and the quick response of the emergency staff during a time of tragedy and uncertainty. BMC Trauma responded immediately to many patients with life-threatening injuries – all of whom survived because they were ready and it’s the kind of work they do every day.
I am selective when it comes to soliciting donations. I know each of you support many organizations that you are passionate about. Running for and supporting BMC is something that I have great passion for. Nobody should be turned away for healthcare they need.
Please join me in my race to meet my personal goal of $17,500 before I cross the finish line in April. No contribution is too small. All donations are tax deductible. You will receive a tax donation letter from BMC.
I would also like to ask you to please consider a corporate match. When entering your match, please enter “JP’s Team – Angela O’Connor” in the notes/comments box to ensure the match is allocated towards appropriately.
Thank you for your support!

For the past 14 years, Boston Medical Center has proudly participated in Boston’s historic marathon, raising more than $3.8 million for the hospital. In 2016, BMC was fortunate to have 91 runners—a group of dedicated teammates, from New York to London to California, who pounded the pavement, crossed the finish line and helped raise more than $952,000. BMC is grateful to John Hancock Financial and the Boston Athletic Association for making Team BMC possible and for recognizing the unique role BMC plays in keeping Boston strong.
This year, philanthropic efforts from Team BMC will be dedicated to the hospital’s Building the New BMC campaign which will include the construction of a new, state-of-the-art Emergency Department for the region. Boston Medical is the busiest provider of trauma and emergency services in the region, with more than 130,000 emergency visits and more than 2,000 trauma admissions per year.
From the privately insured to the homeless, our Emergency Department and Level I Trauma Center offer outstanding care to patients from all walks of life. For many of our patients, our ER not only addresses acute medical issues, it serves as their primary care clinic where they seek treatment for everything from sore throats to sickle-cell disease. But when more severe problems arise, our Trauma Center is always prepared. In the wake of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, BMC Trauma responded immediately to eight patients’ life-threatening injuries and cared for 28 victims in total—all of whom survived. We were ready, because as Boston’s hospital for so many of the region’s most serious trauma cases, it’s the kind of work we do every day.
Understanding that trauma does not discriminate and anyone may need our services in a moment’s time, Team BMC stands committed to ensuring Boston Medical Center remains one of the very best trauma centers in the country. By donating to Team BMC you are showing your commitment to the entire city of Boston.
Thank you for supporting Boston Medical Center in our mission to provide exceptional care, without exception!
