BENEFITING: Boston Medical Center
ORGANIZER: Boston Medical Center
EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
I am once again honored to be joining 14 of our BlackRock colleagues from around the country to run the 2017 Boston Marathon to support the Boston Medical Center (BMC). I am a huge fan of the tradition and what it means to the City of Boston. Patriot’s Day, aka Marathon Monday, is by far my favorite day of the year to be a Bostonian.
When I initially told my two young sons, bursting with pride and joy, that I was planning to run the Marathon, the look on their faces was the exact opposite of what I had expected. They asked me not to run because they were afraid that there could be more bombs. Life can be short and some deaths are senseless. I ran the past two years to show my boys that our city is safe and strong and that we have little to fear. I ran to raise money for BMC because they took excellent care of the people injured in the 2013 attack on our City, and continue to save lives each and every day. This year, I will run to continue to support this fantastic organization and lead by example by showing my boys that each person's individual contribution absolutely makes a difference. The BMC Emergency Department cares for the most vulnerable patients in Boston, yet the current facility is woefully undersized and overcrowded. It was built to handle 60 percent of its current volume—a volume that only continues to grow. We need your help. The funds raised by this year’s marathon team will go directly towards expanding the Emergency Department so they can continue to provide patients with exceptional care, without exception.
I’m so grateful for all the efforts that many of you have made to support us in our three prior marathon runs – and to financially support Boston Medical Center. We have raised over $800,000 for BMC and are hoping to push that over $1 million this year.
Thank you in advance for any support that you are able to provide, financially or emotionally - I will most definitely need both. I have a personal fundraising goal of $10,000 which breaks down to approximately $380 per mile. For those able to sponsor a half mile, I will proudly carry your name, or the name of someone close to you for which you would like to dedicate the half mile(s), on my shirt through the 26.2 mile course. Each name I carry will be the added motivation I need to get through training during the cold, stormy New England winter. Perhaps, mile 21 - Heartbreak Hill?!
Boston Medical is the busiest provider of trauma and emergency services in the region, with more than 130,000 emergency visits and more than 2,000 trauma admissions per year.
From the privately insured to the homeless, their Emergency Department and Level I Trauma Center offers outstanding care to patients from all walks of life. For many of their patients, their ER not only addresses acute medical issues, it serves as their primary care clinic where they seek treatment for everything from sore throats to sickle-cell disease. But when more severe problems arise, their Trauma Center is always prepared. In the wake of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, BMC Trauma responded immediately to patients’ life-threatening injuries. They were ready, because as Boston’s hospital for so many of the region’s most serious trauma cases, it’s the kind of work they do every day.
Understanding that trauma does not discriminate and anyone may need their services in a moment’s time, Team BMC stands committed to ensuring Boston Medical Center remains one of the very best trauma centers in the country. By donating to Team BMC you are showing your commitment to the entire city of Boston.
Thank you for supporting Boston Medical Center in their mission to provide exceptional care, without exception!
