BENEFITING: BUILDING BOTSWANA
Hey team, 3 years on and back to Botswana Orphan Project (BOP) in a couple of weeks – I’m super excited to be taking Jakob to BOP so that he’ll be able to see first-hand how BOP is making a difference in the lives of so many.
What is BOP? Since 2004, BOP has worked with local partners to build six orphan day care centres in key locations around the country, caring for the physical and emotional needs of over 150 precious children. These centres exist with a dual purpose: to prevent further damage from HIV/AIDS by offering self-esteem and life skills education and to alleviate the effects of HIV/AIDS by providing a safe environment where these children can receive the love, care, and nutrition needed to flourish.
What will we do? The orphan centre in Ghanzi (hall, toilet block, office, kitchen, two classrooms and a playground) is not fully operational yet and needs some construction work in order for the local social workers to grant a license to operate the orphan centre. Over the couple of weeks in Ghanzi, approximately 15 volunteers plan to prepare the centre for it to be opened for full time care.
The construction work we plan to do includes:
• Tile the two classrooms
• Fix the ceiling in the two classrooms
• Concrete paving around the classrooms
• Install a gate and fence
• Furnish the classrooms, hall and offices (build cupboards, desks, chairs etc)
• Furnish the kitchen
• Paint hall and classrooms
• Build a shade cloth over the playground
• Install smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.
I’ve attached a couple of links for you from my experience in 2013:
