We're taking our first canoe trip! The youth in CAT PC have learned canoe skills alongside the kayak skills they've practiced. We thought it was high time to take them to one of the world's most beautiful spaces. If you're a paddler, you'll know this area is best explored by canoe. With uncountable lakes connected trails, every trip to the Boundary Waters has as least one portage - where you put all your gear on your back and carry your boat along the path. It's much easier to portage a canoe than a kayak. Our youth have learned leadership and group management skills along with their paddling skills. Many of them, since 2014, have had the opportunity to put these skills into practice on kayaking trips. Now we're adding a canoe trip. One of our youth coaches who will be on the trip ust got back from coaching at a sea kayak symposium. On te second day, she helped lead a half day tour. A long time Chicago area coach worked the same trip. She wrote a note to us after the event, telling us what a pleasure it was to work with this young woman. She wrote " She was excellent, professional, thoughtful and just awesome... showing good listening and leadership skills." We help young people develop paddling skills in Chicago and at paddling events. These trips are where they get to put their leadership into practice. Many of the young people we work with have been written off as suicidal, needing anger management, high school drop outs, criminals. We believe they are so much more. These trips help them develop the skills to show the world that we're right. Thank you so much for being part of this community that builds strong leaders.
