Though it is unknown specifically how prevalent, approximately 1 out of every 5,000-10,000 newborns is affected with a genetic disorder called hypohydrotic ectodermal dysplasia. Children born with HED may lack glands for sweating, have fine or sparse hair and lack teeth and/or nails.
My daughter isn't just special to me, she is 1 of those 5,000-10,000 children. Around the age of 3, our dentist alerted us to the possibility my daughter may not have her adult teeth. Despite insurance coverage struggles, we were able to determine she would only have 8 adult teeth and would require continual dental intervention to maintain normal functions, such as chewing and eating.
Bowling for Bites is a fun way to raise awareness of ectodermal dysplasias in my community while raising funds for the National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias. Please visit www.nfed.org for more details on ectodermal dysplasias and how you can help.
