Educating the public and especially youth about how mining plays a positive role in society is very important. The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc. (SME) is a professional society (nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation) whose more than 15,000 membership represents all professionals serving the minerals industry in more than 100 countries. SME has a fantastic opportunity to continue supporting education through the Mining in Society merit badge for the Boy Scouts of America. This merit badge was successfully launched in 2014 and 12,356 scouts have earned it.
BSA is world-wide organization, as is SME which supports the mining, related industries and education. Understanding not only mining, but the processing of minerals and finally the reclamation of the land is vital. The Summit Bechtel Reserve in Glen Jean, West Virginia where the Jamboree operates, is on reclaimed mining land and is a great example of the progression of mining from start to finish.
This merit badge introduces Scouts to the industry and teaches them about minerals and rocks, how to explore for minerals, mine planning and operations, mineral processing, mining potential for the future, health and safety in mines, stay out of abandoned mines and stay alive, sustainability in mining, careers, mining resources, and reclamation. As you know, there are many aspects to mining and surrounding industries. Being able to open a scout’s eyes to the many careers options and how mining affects their everyday lives is quite an honor.
Please consider donating to help us expand the education of scouts, venturers and leaders through this activity which only happens once every four years. Over 40,000 participants are expected to attend this year's Jamboree to experience camping, activities and earn merit badges.
Large donors, $5,000 or more will be recognized with signage at the booth and if possible on staff apparel as a thank you.
