BENEFITING: AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY
EVENT DATE: Oct 15, 2011
On October 15th, I am going to run my first marathon, the ING Hartford Marathon. I am running to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
Many people have been affected by cancer. Cancer's effect on me began before I was born, when my grandpa died from cancer. I never got to meet him, but always wished I had. Then, when I was in 4th grade, my grandma died from cancer. She was a loving mother of EIGHT KIDS, and one of the funniest people I've ever met. She was just an amazing woman, and I'll always have her to thank for my sense of humor.
Recently, my best friend's mom passed away after a long battle with cancer. My friend is the nicest guy I've ever met, he is forever positive and looking to get all he can out of life. I can't imagine going through what he has, but hopefully the money raised will ensure that someone else won't have to experience what he or his family has experienced.
Therefore, I am running in memory of these three people and for everyone else affected by this terrible disease.
Perhaps at this point you are wondering why I chose to run in a marathon for such a cause. I began considering the idea after standing in the crowd at the Boston Marathon watching hundreds of happy runners pass by. I was amazed at their determination and high spirits. I gave many high-fives to middle aged men and thought, "I'm so young. I have way more free time. I should be doing this too."
I've always loved raising money and running, so I thought that a marathon would be the perfect way to do both. Since then, I've started an 18 week training schedule to prepare myself for the arduous 26.2 miles. So far I've made it to 21 miles at a little over an 8 minute pace. I'm not trying to set any records; I'm just trying to finish and raise some money.
If anything that I've said has inspired you, I would greatly appreciate any donation you could muster. I know times are tough for many people, but any amount would help. Plus, you can rest assured your money is going toward a great cause.
On top of that, if I reach my goal of $500 dollars, I will shave my head. You can see my hair in the photos to the left. Clearly, it needs cutting.
If the goal is reached before the marathon, I will shave my head before I run so that my hair won't hold me back. (This is ideal, so donate now!!)
If I raise $1000 dollars before the marathon, I will dye my hair red and not get it cut at all. So there's incentive for anyone who wants me to run through Hartford looking like an anime character. Donating is easy too!
I thank you for your support! Much love.
