BENEFITING: Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana
As president of Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County, I can see the impact that our Clubs are making on kids daily. Recently, there were two stories my staff shared with me that hit home – one was a mother of a Club member that confided in staff member that she has stage two ovarian cancer for a second time. She wasn’t sure how she was going to share this news with her son as he did not take it well the first time she was diagnosed. But what this mother did share was how good she felt about the Club – and that it is a “happy” place for her child, one where she feels comfortable that he will be taken care of emotionally if the cancer takes her away from him. Another story was about a fifth grade Club member that has been coming to our Portage Club since she was in kindergarten. Her mother came to our Club Director and told him that her father passed away in his sleep due to health complications. She wanted to “break” this news to her daughter at the Club in the presence of the Club Director to help ease this news. These two stories highlight how important our Clubs are in the lives of children and how we truly do serve as a home away from home. I am proud of our Clubs and our staff that make lasting and positive impacts on children.
