BENEFITING: Boys & Girls Club of Monmouth County
Running is a fantastic sport, in my opinion, for two reasons. First, there is no gear, no team, no equipment (other than shoes) used in this sport, it is just you and your body out there, pushing your own limits. I am never more in tune with my own strength and physical ability than when I am running, and I never feel more empowered than when I push the limits of what I can do.
The second reason running is fantastic, is the community you enter once you call yourself "a runner". Runners do amazing things, everyday. Just look at double-amputees, cancer survivors and blind runners who complete marathons! Look at how much money we raise for charity by running. And most importantly, look at the support we provide one another at each and every race or group workout we attend. The most beautiful things about running, is the spirit of the sport from this aspect. Elite runners push each other to greatness to break world records and provide us all with breathtaking finishes... the rest of us mortals cheer each other on at races, and pace friends to PR's (personal records).
I want to bring the beauty of this sport to a group of children at the Boys and Girls Club in Asbury Park who have all signed up to participate in a running club but cannot afford shoes. The sneaker Factory in Long Branch has gotten us a deal on shoes, each child will get a new pair of Sauconys for a steep discount through our program... but I still need some money to get them the shoes! Please help out, any amount helps, and the impact could be life-changing for kids who could use a positive influence in their lives.
Once shoes are purchased and the running club is active, I would like to get involvement from local athletes to conduct seminars, coaching sessions, support via-email, and to cheer at local races. First and foremost, I need to get these kids some shoes, and put a smile on their faces to get them excited about joining us in the running community! In my view, it is really sad for 35 children in Monmouth County not to have running shoes, when many of us in this area have plenty to give, so let's get this thing going :)
