THE STORY:

BOYS HOPE GIRLS HOPE wrote -

Just as our runners will race thru the streets of Manhattan, so too do our scholars run the race each day towards a brighter future thru their efforts to better themselves.  Won't you help us offer them a helping hand by supporting our runners, supporting our scholars and supporting the future of our community?

MISSION STATEMENT
BHGHNY's mission is to help academically capable and motivated children from at-risk situations meet their full potential and become men and women for others by providing them with the safe and stable living environment, academic support, and guidance they need to finish high school, graduate from college, and become responsible and productive citizens.

ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND
In 1977, Father Paul Sheridan, SJ, an educator in St. Louis, MO, created a new program - Boys Hope Girls Hope - to address the needs of children whose potential was threatened by shattered neighborhoods, distressed families, endemic poverty, and other factors beyond their control. Today, Boys Hope Girls Hope (BHGH) is a non-sectarian, international charitable organization with operations in thirteen U.S. cities and in Latin America. While much of BHGH's national network of affiliates engages its scholars in small group-home settings of ten or less students per household, BHGHNY was charged in 2009 by its Board of Directors to close its previous operations in Staten Island, NY in order to develop an innovative urban boarding program serving at-risk young men and women from the five boroughs of New York City. Subsequently BHGHNY consolidated and moved its operations to Brooklyn, NY.

At its most rudimentary level, BHGHNY's work is an effort to rescue children and to provide them with an environment that celebrates academic achievement and promotes service to others as the bedrock of community-building and the actualization of self-worth. During the course of the past four years, BHGHNY has experienced its most robust period of growth and development in its history and currently serves a record number of scholars in residence. Arriving each week on Sunday evening, BHGHNY scholars follow a highly structured and rigorous program and schedule until their weekly departure on Friday afternoons. BHGHNY serves its scholars through this boarding program model - the only one of its kind in the region.

BHGHNY prides itself as a college-readiness initiative with a significant focus on service-learning. It also recognizes the value of civic engagement, appropriate socialization and recreation and strives to achieve and nurture a value-centered nondenominational community rooted in respect, kindness, discipline, effort, and individual and group expressions of excellence.

Today, BHGHNY occupies a unique place and space among its youth-serving peer institutions and is now widely recognized as a leading advocate for low-income first generation college bound students. While its scope and scale have remained relatively consistent during the past four years, the depth and breadth of its services have earned high marks and praise from a number of referring schools, community based organizations, church groups, neighboring colleges and universities and from its two partner schools: Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School where BHGHNY boys attend and Cristo Rey Brooklyn High School where our girls are enrolled.
