The Story

EVENT DATE: Jun 04, 2016

All funds raised for Bradley’s 5K and Silent Auction will benefit CureDuchenne, a nonprofit organization, whose mission is to cure Duchenne. Bradley was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy in November 2000 at the age of 3 years old. The diagnosis was officially confimred in January 2001.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a progressive muscle disease, affecting 1 in every 3,500 live male births. Those with Duchenne often lose their ability to walk by 12 and most don’t survive their mid-20s. Currently, Duchenne has no approved treatment and no cure, but Dr. Flanigan and his team from Nationwide Children’s Hospital have been working diligently towards one concerning duplication and exon skipping.Bradley has an Exon 2 Duplication on the gene that codes for dystophin. You can learn more about Dr. Flanigan's research at www.cureduchenne.org/Flanigan .

Bradley has been receiving great care at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital where he is seen every 6-7 months. He has sleep apnea and heart issues, but he is still walking. We thank God for allowing him to continue walking. Even though Bradley is still walking, he has many challenges each day because of his disabilities and muscle weakness. Despite the challenges, Bradley is currently going to college part-time and plans to get a degree in electrical engineering. Mentally, he is one of the strongest people I know. He is determined to continue walking and to continue fighting.

Bradley's 5K and Silent Auction will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at the Cobden Community Park in Cobden, Illinois from 8am-1pm. The Race will begin with the Runners at 9am. Walkers will start one minute after the runners. The Silent Auction will begin at 8am and end at 12pm.  We appreciate any help that anyone can give. You can help by running or walking in the 5K, becoming a sponsor, making a monetary donation, or donating a silent auction item.
