BENEFITING: BRAIN INJURY ASSOCIATION OF NEW YORK STATE INC
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
I always thought I would run the NYC marathon one day. I ran competitive track in college (although I was a sprinter), and afterwards have run various half marathons, triathlons, and several other races. However, as the years rolled on, family and kids come into the picture, and the increasingly difficult lottery system was established, it felt like this was one race that was ok to let pass by.
But this year is different. This year, I am committed to running this race and raising awareness for this great cause. I am inspired to run this year with my father in mind. My father Bob Zimardo was a avid runner and athlete, competing in several marathons (including NYC), triathlons and other races. Two years ago, while out for a daily workout bike ride, he was thrown off the bike in an accident and suffered a traumatic brain injury that required multiple brain surgeries and many months in the hospital where he had lost the ability to walk or speak. He has spent all his time since working hard to regain these abilities and get back to his pre-injury form. This hard work inspires us every day as we are really seeing the gains he has made. Today, he trains at the gym regularly, rides a stationary bike daily, does hundreds of situps a day and even walked a 5k race this year.
My sister Corinne and I were so pleased that the Brain Injury Association of New York has established a partnership with the NYC Marathon for the first time this year and are honored to run on their team in support of our family and all the other families who have been affected by brain injury and are in need of help.
