THE STORY:

LearningRx Shreveport/Bossier wrote -

You are NOT stuck with the brain you were born with or relegated to what "they" all say you or your child can or cannot do. Let us help you get the most out of those dendrites. We can and WILL train your brain...guaranteed!

Unfortunately, In our geographic region, many of the children who need cognitive skills training the most come from underprivileged families who cannot afford our program.

A plethora of research has shown that when children from low income homes enter school, they are often behind their peers from the start, cognitively, academically, and socially.

Research also shows that when these students begin at a disadvantage, the achievement gap increases exponentially year after year, often leading to poor grades, failure, high dropout rates, and low college enrollment.

Our center offers discounts and our own personal funding, but  there are so many Title I schools in our area with hundreds of children whose parents cannot afford our program and have expressed great interest in enrolling in LearningRx...we want to help them all, but we can't afford to. Here's where your sponsorship can help...

There are three specific students we have accepted into our program and are attempting to gain sponsorship for their tuition. If you'd like to help, you can either direct your donation to one of these students or to our sponsorship program in general. We recieve applications daily from low-income parents whose children are in need of our services:

Shelby P. (http://www.carepages.com/carepages/ShelbyPatrick) Shelby nearly drowned this summer at a local pool. She was at the bottom of the pool for nearly 5 minutes and was resucitated, but remained in a vegetative state. The doctors, her family, and the community had little hope, but we all prayed and prayed. After several months at LSUHMC and Baylor, through God's grace Shelby has begun a miraculous recovery and was able to begin 4th grade with her friends.

Her cognitive skills have diminished considerably, but she is a bright, loving, incredible girl. We love her already...I am her personal brain trainer, and she has become the sunshine in my life. Her family is unable to afford the tuition to continue the program, and we are doing all we can to help keep her enrolled. Please give the Patricks a hand and help us continue strengthening Shelby's weaknesses so she can achieve success in her already miraculous life.

You can see Shelby in the main fundraiser photo...she made the top 10 stories of 2012 of Shreveport/Bossier this year with the miracle of her recovery. and she is also the Shreveport United Way Spokesperson. You can view pictures and videos of Shelby's training so far at http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.475400239158808.108875.136129993085836&type=3

Darryl is 7, and is repeating first grade. He is living with his aunt after being granted temporary custody while his mother is in rehab for narcotics abuse and his father is in prison. Darryl was repeatedly abused and neglected for many years, and is so far behind in school that his aunt, who also has 2 children of her own, is afraid that she will be unable to catch him up. His cognitive skills are delayed, as he's had no academic preparation from either of his parents. Our program would guarantee a gain of at least 3 years in at least one of those areas, specifically in reading to start. Darryl's aunt is going to court for full custody in April, and if he is in our program full time, that will give her something to show to the court that she is making an effort to promote his academic well-being, as well as his emotional and physical health and welfare.

Seth is 13 and in 6th grade. Mom was in serious car accident and is unable to work. There is no father or other family in the picture. Mom is alone and is unable to assist financially. We have enrolled him in the program at a discounted rate, however, mom is still having trouble making the minimal payments. Steven has severe dyslexia, which diminishes his reading and comprehension ability across all subjects. His grades are falling, and mom is afraid that he will fail 6th grade and fall behind irreparably. His self esteem and his motivation are deteriorating and he is being bullied at school for his reading difficulties, among other issues. He wants so badly for reading to come easily to him. If you can help mom make her payments or sponsor a portion of his program, they would be so appreciative. Thank you!

Any donation, from a dollar to 1,000 to 5,000 dollars can help. We offer discounts and our own personal funding, but we just can't afford to help everyone and stay afloat. There are so many Title I schools in our area with hundreds of children whose parents cannot afford extracurricular assistance.

THANK YOU. PLEASE keep in touch with me (r.lewis@learningrx.net) to stay virtually involved with your donation benefits if you so choose. We'd love to keep you in the loop, unless you'd prefer to remain anonymous. http://www.learningrx.com/shreveport/
