THE STORY:

Greetings!   My name is Angela Rudig and I am excited to share that I am running the New York City Marathon 2016 on behalf of the Brain Tumor Foundation.

Two very personal events have occurred in my family, which compel me to raise awareness for brain cancer research.  In 1995, at the age of 67, and while appearing to be in radiant health, my energetic mother was diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme.   Aggressive inoperable tumors stole her from 6 children and a husband of 40 years in less than six months.  Twenty years later, in January 2015, my oldest brother Tom, an avid runner, was diagnosed with anaplastic oligodendroglioma, grade 3. After brain surgery and a year of treatments behind him, Tom continues to be tested with MRIs on a quarterly basis.  I am elated to tell you that Tom, a 3-time marathoner himself, has resumed his beloved running.  Every time we speak I am humbled by his positive energy, gratitude and courage he exudes.

The shock of my brother’s diagnosis, following the loss of our mother, put the question to the forefront in our family whether or not there is a genetic connection to different types of brain tumors.  It is my hope that the money we raise for research will help to provide answers for survivors and their families.  The funds raised here will go directly to the BTF’s Road to Early Detection campaign, which offers free MRI brain screenings.  The results of these scans go toward a research project with the hope of learning the cause of brain tumors be it genetic or environmental.  Let’s work to remove the mystery of why brain tumors occur, and find a cure.

One step at time, one mile at a time, I will train and complete the 2016 NYC Marathon for my brother Tom and the collective survivors and families, with the enduring memory of my mom edging me along the way.

I am proud to represent the Brain Tumor Foundation to aid in early detection and research.  Please Donate!

The Brain Tumor Foundation (BTF) guides and supports patients and families during the turbulent times when their lives are touched by a brain tumor by offering support groups, medical referrals and informational events.

BTF’s Road to Early Detection campaign was launched to increase public awareness about early detection of brain tumors and the urgent need for brain scan screenings.

With the expanded Sponsor-A-City Tour, BTF is providing free MRI brain scans nationally, in the hope of understanding the relationship between patient factors and brain tumors.  In collaboration with a multidisciplinary research team at Columbia University in New York City, we are gathering key information from these scans that will hopefully help us to better understand the epidemiology of brain tumors – whether it be environmental, genetic or some other still unexamined source.

* This year, close to 700,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed with a brain or central nervous system tumor.

* Close to 1 million people are living with brain tumors that have yet to be detected.

Please support our runners’ efforts to raise awareness of the need for early detection of brain tumors.  DONATE TODAY!
