BENEFITING: Congregation of St John
EVENT DATE: Jan 03, 2014
In the city of Salvador, Brazil half of the city is made up of favela or slums, dividing the city into neighborhoods of the very rich and the extremely poor. With no hope for a decent future, the people who live in the favela believe that only money can lead to happiness, so they resort to selling drugs and prostitution in a complete abandonment of their Christian faith.
The Community of St. John is a religious congregation from France who founded a mission in Salvador, Brazil 10 years ago. Their goal is to create a Christian oasis in the midst of chaos in order to give the people hope for their future. In January 2014, the Community is opening a school for children and adults where they can learn skills, such as Spanish, English, baking, sewing, and music as well as participate in wholesome social activities.
For the past three years I have been praying and discerning for an opportunity to use the unique gifts that God has given me in order to bring hope to others and help them receive the light of Christ. I hope to be a missionary with the Community of St. John, helping them minister to the people of Salvador, Brazil for one year starting January 2014. I have been in South America before and I am very comfortable relating to the Latino culture. The fact that I am already bilingual in English and Spanish will make it easier for me to learn Portuguese.
My main focus is forming a children’s choir of sacred music but I will also be able help the mission by teaching music, baking, English and Spanish and performing other duties that re needed by the mission. I will also be participating in the daily prayer life of the religious community for strength and to continue coming closer to God.
But in order to fulfill my desire to work at the mission I need your support!
My goal is raise enough money for my plane ticket as well as music supplies for the mission. Since the school is starting from scratch they are in need supplies such as note charts, set of hand bells, pitch pipe, chant flash card set, CDs, music poster, dry erase board, etc.
Thank you for your generous support of my mission! I look forward to hearing from you soon.
