BENEFITING: Breast Cancer Alliance, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Sep 21, 2015
The mission of the Breast Cancer Alliance is to improve survival rates and quality of life for those impacted by breast cancer through better prevention, early detection, treatment and cure. To promote these goals, we invest in innovative research, breast surgery fellowships, regional education, dignified support and screening for the underserved.
We offer four types of grants annually: Exceptional Project Grants, Young Investigator Grants, Breast Surgery Fellowships and Education and Outreach Grants. We encourage clinical doctors and research scientists whose primary focus is breast cancer research to apply for either the Exceptional Project or Young Investigator Grant. As governmental funding hovers at an all-time low, we are committed to launching careers of new scientists, and to supporting well-established scientists on the cusp of something new. Society of Surgical Oncology accredited institutions may submit requests for funding for fellowships if they are within a 200 mile radius of the Breast Cancer Alliance office. Encouraging a growing number of specially trained breast surgeons is a critical focus of ours. We invite Directors of programs that are directly related to breast cancer services to apply for the Education and Outreach Grant, giving underserved women access to care that their financial situation otherwise prevents.
Breast Cancer Alliance is a regional foundation with national impact, and its foundation was built on LOVE. LOVE at the BCA is defined by what we do best: build relationships. We were founded by 6 women, one of whom was dying of stage 4 breast cancer. These women rallied their friends, their families, and their community to start was has become one of the leading non-profit, non-corporate breast cancer foundations in the US. That is our definition of LOVE. People LOVE being involved with BCA. Like many charitable organizations, you can write a check, you can attend a golf outing, or you can read our newsletter. With BCA you can also tour the labs of our researchers and get in-person updates on their work. You can sit with the breast surgeons whose fellowships we fund and hear their inspiring stories of why they chose this field, and where they are going next to save and change more lives. You can visit the hospitals and centers for psycho-emotional support that are in the trenches with patients each day, navigating new diagnoses and trying to quell real fear. You can be a part of our event committees and help raise money to support our mission. You can sit on our grant committees and help decide where our money will go. We are a two person office: an Executive Director and an Executive Assistant. That model immediately welcomes anyone into the fold of the BCA, and BCA succeeds because, more than just raising critical funds to help eradicate breast cancer, we build meaningful, lasting, trusting relationships. That is LOVE.
