BENEFITING: The Breast Cancer Research Foundation
ORGANIZER: The Breast Cancer Research Foundation
EVENT DATE: Nov 03, 2013
As many of you know, I spent much of 2010 in hospitals and doctors' offices, completing treatment for Stage III breast cancer. Breast cancer treatment isn't fun, but it is increasingly effective. I recovered my health, and I was able to reclaim all the joys of my life. As I got better, I loved the image of crossing the finish line at the NYC Marathon. It seemed like the best possible way to reassure my family, my friends, and myself that I was strong again.
My cancer was caused in part by a genetic mutation that runs in my family. Due to environmental factors, it seems to appear earlier and more aggressively in each successive generation, so that while my grandmother was diagnosed at age 50, I was diagnosed at 40. Thanks to advances in breast cancer treatment, I will be there for my daughter. If progress continues, she will never need to wonder whether or not she will be around to love her life or enjoy her children.
People often say things like that – 'if progress continues ...' – when in fact the goal is decades away. That isn't the case here. While breast cancer rates have continued to rise, it has also become the target of more and more successful treatments. There are some who believe that current research will yield a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime. (Not science fiction, but science.)
That's the shortest rah-rah speech I can write. I have a vested interest in running for breast cancer research, but so does nearly everyone I know. If you can, please donate to our cause!
