BENEFITING: Children's Hospital Los Angeles
EVENT DATE: Dec 30, 2014
Give breath to children who suffer from respiratory disorders.
7 million children in the United States suffer from pediatric pulmonology related diseases. As a result, children spend a significant amount of time in the hospital being treated for their illness. Children miss school, family gatherings, and time playing with friends. While the prospect of taking a family photo sounds exciting, imagine a mother and father having to make the difficult decision to take a photo without their little guy or princess because the wheezing is too severe to discharge them from the hospital. Even more disheartening is the inability to afford a family photo because the hospital bills and cost of outpatient care is too overwhelming.
Working with other photographers, make-up artist, and stylist we will give the families of children suffering with respiratory disorders a moment to catch their breath. Annually we partner with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) and invite patients and their families to a group family photo session with professional photographers in a professional setting. We bring the photo studio to them. These photographers, make-up artist, and stylist come together to donate their skills and give back to the community.
Risks and Challenges
Pledged contributions go towards purchasing materials for prints, make-up kits for beauty touch up, glass frames to place the photos in, food, and activities for the families and volunteers to enjoy throughout the day. The photos will be printed and given to the families the same day.
*One-time-use make-up kits are necessary to prevent cross infection.
In 2011, I fought aggressively to find financial backers and supporters for the Breath GIVING Portraits Project. Unfortunately, in 2011 the project was not successfully funded. Because funding on http://www.Kickstarter.com is all or nothing, all pledges had been automatically canceled. As a result, I didn't want to let down the children and their families. So, the entire project was funded out of pocket in 2012.
In 2013, we fundraised through crowdrise.com and reached our fundraised goal. The final disbursement to the Children's Hospital Los Angeles was made in February 2014. All funds were set aside for future Breath Giving Portraits Project activity, and research projects related to pulmonary fibrosis and cystic fibrosis.
in 2014, the Breath Giving Portraits Project team partnered with CHLA and Great Strides, a cystic fibrosis foundation, to provide professional photos to each walk team. This was the first attempt to bring out photo studio outdoors to the beach.
At the conclusion of every photo shoot, additional prints are provided to the hospital to be shown in a gallery located in the hospital wing of their choice. Help us breathe new hope into the lives of families by way of giving them breath-taking family photos.
Special thanks to Peteyk Styles, Tim Greenlee, and Tami Bahat for encouraging to me to keep this idea alive and assisting in making it a reality.
