BENEFITING: Community Foundation Alliance, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2011
This Sunday (Nov. 6) four months of training will culminate with 26.2 miles through the five boroughs of New York City. Mostly while traveling for work I've trained in NYC, Louisville, Fort Worth, LA, Huntington Beach, San Diego, San Francisco (thank you Golden Gate bridge, the highlight!), Honduras, and Springfield, MO. Though many of you don't know it, you have been with me as I've been training. I've reflected on memories past, wrestled with the present, and hoped for the future. Thank you to each and every one of you for the ways that you have touched my life, both big and small. Every one of you is part of my story, and you will be out there with me on Sunday.
I'm writing not only to say that you will be with me on the streets of New York, but to ask you to JOIN IN in contributing towards the lives of others in memory of your loved ones. 2011 has presented me with my closest encounter yet with cancer. I lost my Godfather to cancer on May 1, and my heart broke when I learned that a family friend's wife (Robin Michelle Evernham) had passed away at the age of 33, leaving behind her husband, Scott, and their two little girls, Mora and Lucia. Scott and Robin decided to redirect the support they received during their fight to those who are in need by creating the Robin's Nest Charitable Fund, designed to help other families battling cancer that need financial assistance for non-medical related expenses (i.e. travel expenses to a hospital, one last vacation as a family, etc.). You can read more about Robin's inspirational story here.
All contributions made on this page will benefit the Robin's Nest Charitable Fund directly. (For clarity, the Robin's Nest Charitable Fund is a fund established through the Vanderburgh Community Foundation, which is a subsidiary of the Community Foundation Alliance Inc., the listed charity above.) I am honored to contribute to Robin's legacy in a small way, and I hope you will JOIN me. This is less about me asking you to contribute to a specific charity or cause, however, and more about bringing my community together to share in the experience and contribute as you feel led. The world is full of need, and we all have different experiences that connect us to certain needs over others. That is a good thing. If there is another cause that you would like to donate to, I encourage you to do so. Please visit the Crowdrise NYC Marathon Event Page and find the team/charity/cause of your choosing (the search function works pretty well).
This is also not about raising a certain sum of money. I had hoped to suggest a donation of $2.62, but I guess $10 is the minimum, unfortuantely, and donations have to be in whole dollar increments. So I guess we'll go with $10, but by all means feel free to contribute whatever amount you would like. I would love nothing more than to see a string of $10 donations come in with initials attached to them in your loved ones' honor. For those who know I've been a reluctant participant in the Facebooks and Twitters, here's your chance to show me the power of social media. (One quick note here. If you do donate you'll be given the option to share the link. It automatically fills in "Community Alliance Foundation" but I might recommend changing it to the "Robin's Nest Charitable Fund" or whatever charity you select.)
It was while my Godfather was in the hospital that I found out I had gotten IN to the NYC Marathon, and I'll never forget the smirk on his face when I told him. It is in his name, Joseph Francis "Critter" Critelli, that I have made my donation to the Robin's Nest Charitable Fund. Drop me a note with the names or initials of who you would like to honor, and I will bring them with me on Sunday. Please also send me a pic! I don't know how many photos they will upload to my page, but I'll keep posting until they tell me I can't.
