As some of you already know firsthand, I consider myself to be somewhat of a fisherman. Ask anyone who knows me well and I’m sure that they may describe my love of the sport as fanatical, an obsession or perhaps even crazy. That being said, I was recently asked why I like to fish. I really had to think about that one. It would be too easy just to say because I do, so I took a brief excursion to a local river to try figure it out. I started with the easy answers, because it’s fun, it’s a good way to wind down from a busy day, it’s a place where I can think…ect. But I quickly came to the realization that it’s much deeper then that.
To me fishing connects me to something bigger then myself. It allows me a place step back and not over think every decision I make. I think some find this on the golf course stepping up to the tee… not me, I grip, re-grip, take a practice swings and obsess over all the reasons I’m not going to hit the ball where I want it to go, but when I step into the river there is none of that. No stress, no judgment, no worries. It’s a place where I can lose myself and find myself. It is a place where I can step back and just enjoy the moment on a very personal level.
This year, I have the pleasure of working on the board of directors for the Paint Creek 1 Fly. This event is centered around a fly fishing tournament with all proceeds going to Casting for Recovery. Casting for Recovery is a 501C3 that provides an opportunity for women whose lives have been profoundly affected by breast cancer to gather in a natural setting and learn the sport of fly fishing. Just as important, the retreats offer an opportunity to meet new friends, network, exchange information, and have fun. Their weekend retreats incorporate counseling, educational services, and the trained facilitators that staff each retreat, including a psycho-social therapist, a health care professional (e.g. physical therapist, nurse), as well as fly-fishing instructors and river helpers.
Casting for Recovery providse a great service to those who have been affected by this horrible disease. While so many equally important charities focus on finding the cure, Casting for Recovery focus is centered on helping the women adjust to life after the diagnosis.
My team’s goal this year is to raise $2500 for the event. Please help me in providing Casting for Recovery with the funding necessary to continue to their healing retreats for those affected by breast cancer so they to can step back and just enjoy the moment.
