Around six months ago I decided to make the commitment to participate in Haymakers for Hope charity boxing event to raise money for the Jimmy Fund & Dana Farber. For those of you not familiar with the organization they are a non-profit group that recruits complete novices to train with pro boxing trainers for 4-6 months & then participate in a USA Boxing sanctioned fight in front of 1500 or so people with all proceeds going directly to cancer research.
So on May 17th ‘Kid Frosty’ Higgins will make his USA Boxing amateur debut at the House of Blues in Boston.
This commitment has definitely been more than I bargained for as it has been both mentally & physically grueling. I have a great trainer & great sparring partners but getting beat up on an almost daily basis has been challenging to say the least. The training has also certainly taken time away from my family & business and will continue only more so for the next month. All that said, I could not have asked for a better experience to help raise some money to fight a terrible disease that has left some mark on everyone that we know.
Over the past 5 years or so I have seen 3 friends lose children under 5 years old to neuroblastoma, which is a rare form of cancer associated with the nerve cells and adrenal glands. It commonly occurs in infants and very young children and its cause is unknown. Only 650 new cases are reported in the US annually - so therefore it is regarded as an orphan disease. This means that it does not attract much funding and it is left largely to the families of neuroblastoma patients to raise the necessary funds to further research and find a cure. Per my request all of the funds that I raise via donations & ticket sales will be specifically directed towards neuroblastoma research in the memory of Charlotte, Christopher, & Jack.
If you can afford to do so please support me with a donation and/or by attending the fights on May 17th in Boston. By all accounts this is a great time & very unique event that is not your typical fundraiser. It would be a huge boost to see as many of you there as possible rooting me on. Here is good little video with testimonials from last year: http://vimeo.com/32816852
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this & for your support. Win or lose I will be proud for having done this & the support that I know I will receive from my family & friends.
