On Sunday, October 16, 2016 my daughter Brianna and I were on our way back from a wonderful weekend in Atlanta with family and friends. We had just pulled over so that she could stretch out in the back seat to stretch her legs for the rest of the ride back to North Carolina; when suddenly she screamed out in pain and began to cry. My daughter is a pretty tough young woman who coaches volleyball and stays very active. We thought she just had a muscle cramp at first, but she was crying in terrible pain so I found the nearest Emergency Department so that she could be seen. An amazing Nurse Practitioner (I love nurses!) ordered an Ultra Sound and she had a "gut" instinct to order the blood clot test. They found 2 yes 2!! Blood clots in her leg and we found out that it was the birth control pills she had started a month ago for menstrual issues. They put her in blood thinners and pain meds and as of today she is much better and will be following up with her doctors. Brianna knows many people and decided to do Facebook live to share her story. What we found was how many lives have been lost due to blood clots and how blessed she truly is to have caught this issue early. Our goal is to raise $1,000.00 to donate to the National Blood Clot Alliance and to raise awareness of this issue; especially in young women who are thinking about or taking birth control pills. We want to encourage them to ask the hard questions and work with their clinicians so that they can be healthy and informed.
