BENEFITING: American Red Cross

Brian Hilk

THE STORY:

My name is Brian, I am just another community college student who will be celebrating his 21st birthday soon. So why am I donating the big 2-1 to the American Red Cross? After graduating High School, I made the unconventional choice to take a gap year by serving 10 months with AmeriCorps, a national service organization that mobilizes Americans to perform national and community service. My first assignment would be in New York City to help out with Hurricane Sandy Recovery. It was here that I would meet Red Cross volunteers and work alongside them. After four months in New York, I came away impressed by the organization and even got to visit the New York City chapter's office before I left. The American Red Cross had played a huge role in helping the New York City Metropolitan area recover from the 2nd worst Hurricane in American History. Seeing the organization's impact on the lives of New Yorkers who had struggled throughout the disaster allowed to me to learn about the amazing work that American Red Cross staff do everyday. Throughout the rest of my AmeriCorps service, whether it was in Philadelphia canvassing neighborhoods to raise awareness to the danger of home fires, or in West Virginia where I met a man who had worked for the International Red Cross in the Nigerian Civil War, I had the privilege to learn more and more about the American Red Cross. Admittedly I did not know a lot about this organization before my AmeriCorps service, but now through first hand experience, I am proud to day that I support the Red Cross. From the smallest home fires to the largest natural disasters, the Red Cross is there. Whether it be supporting our Veterans or keeping our nation's blood supply going, American Red Cross volunteers and staff put great effort into supporting their communities and their country. Please join me for my birthday in an effort to raise $500 for this great organization. Thank you, Brian A. Hilk
