EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 20, 2015
My primary motivation for joining the BWH 2015 Boston Marathon team is the work being done by Brigham’s Innovation Hub. As one of the leading institutions in healthcare innovation worldwide, the Brigham, through the iHub, supports its clinicians and scientists in their efforts to develop new technologies and continuously improve healthcare. When I was 17 my mother died from breast cancer. The technologies and innovations around breast cancer detection and treatment that are available to my wife and my family and friends today – for the most part did not exist when my mother fell ill. The breakthroughs in mammogram sensitivity, in operating suites like Amigo and even in some of the patient communities such as Patients Like Me – could have meant significantly different outcomes for my sister, my father and me. I am not a doctor or a scientist, but I am a runner, and if I can contribute to future technologies that may be able to save lives and keep families together, then I want to run. Some of the innovations currently under development in the iHub and throughout Brigham just need a little funding to move forward – whether it is for a prototype, a beta test or to fund an engineer partnering with a clinician to help bring his or her idea to life. I can’t imagine a better way to contribute funds I raise as part of Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s marathon team than to contribute to real breakthroughs happening at the hospital every day.
