BENEFITING: Brigham and Women's Hospital
ORGANIZER: Brigham and Women's Hospital
EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 20, 2015
I have committed to running the Boston Marathon this spring on behalf of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Fund. This is the foundation established by family-acquantainces Audrey and Steven Reny, parents of Gillian Reny, a 2013 graduate of BB&N and victim of the marathon bombings. Gillian was standing with her parents at the finish line waiting for her sister to finish when the bombs went off. Her parents were treated for minor injuries, but Gillian remained in the hospital for months, alive, but seriously injured. Doctors were shockingly able to save both of her legs after the many initial diagnoses of amputation, and today, as you may know, Gillian is a proud and active member of the UPenn community.
Running is a huge passion of mine, and I can’t think of a better way to cap off my senior year (and perhaps my last year in Boston) by running the race I’ve watched for the past seventeen years.
I have committed to raising $10,000 for the Stepping Strong Fund at BWH. Marathon wise, this is a rare and typically unattainable goal. But this is exactly why I’ve set this goal: to challenge myself physically and emotionally to raise the most money I can while pushing my body to the breaking point. I hope that the reward of crossing the finish line knowing that I’ve put $10k towards limb reconstruction and trauma healing innovation is as great is it can be. Yes, this is a charity cause, but to me, it’s more important. My goal of running this marathon is to prove to myself that through activism (and sweat and vomit and pain), substantial funds can be raised and substantial change can happen.
I thank you in advance for your support and I hope to see you somewhere along the 26.2 on April 20th, 2015.
From our parent team: A proud partner with the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.), Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) is excited to present two exceptional Boston Marathon teams this year: our core BWH Marathon Team, which supports life-giving breakthroughs across all disciplines and disease areas at the hospital; and the Stepping Strong Marathon Team, initiated by a Boston Marathon bombing survivor, which fuels innovative research and clinical programs in trauma healing and limb reconstruction at BWH. Since 1998, our BWH Marathon Team has raised more than $6.6 million to support world-class patient-centered care, groundbreaking research, community programs, and education for the next generation of healthcare leaders. Thank you for supporting this transformational work.
