Bright Star Montessori Learning Center
Organized by: Mercedes Uriegas Corcuera
The Bright Star Montessori Learning Center is a community based school situated in the Ng’ando slums within Nairobi. As largely known life within a slum is very difficult as people who live in these kind of habitat are faced by a lot of difficulties. This school was established to help keep children off the streets hence having them get an education and giving them an opportunity to become responsible people in the society in future. The school enrolls children from age 3 years to about 12 years i.e. from pre-school to grade seven. Most of these children are either orphaned whose only guardians are their old grandparents, others have single parents who play the role of mother and father. Brightstar school has a total of 100 pupils who are currently enrolled however on a day to day basis not all the children attend to school due to some difficult situations within their families. This obviously affects the children performance in their education. The school has 6 teachers some of them being volunteer teachers which means that the school is under staffed as the funds raised as school fees is not enough to cater for teacher salaries and rental fee for the premises. Guardians and parents of these children do not have steady jobs they mostly do casual jobs which makes it a struggle for them to make ends meet. The school requires a stable feeding program to help keep the children in class on daily basis hence help them in their performance in class. As most parents cannot raise school fees for these children a sponsorship program would be very helpful. The school also requires learning materials especially for the pre-school as well as text books and other stationery for the upper classes.
