BENEFITING: Christian Peacemaker Teams
EVENT DATE: May 21, 2013
Hello everyone, my name is Bri Knisley. I am a 20 year old student attending Wilmington College. I have created this fundraiser to assist in gathering the aid I need to travel to Israel/Palestine, a region that has been plagued by conflict, injustice, and instability long enough that several generations have been born in the refugee camps located in Palestine.
For those of you unfamiliar with the conflict, the Palestinian/Israeli struggle is one that has existed for decades.
This video (not mine) provides a simple introduction to the conflict:
The information provided in this video may be very different from some of the things those of you in the US have learned about the issue, and I encourage you to look in to the matter on your own if any of these facts seem off base. I would also like to recognize that there have been vicious attacks on the lives of both Palestinian and Israeli people, and that across both sides there has been pain and loss of life.
Regardless of what you personally believe, "who is right vs who is wrong", it cannot be denied that without conversation and interaction between both sides, peace is never going to happen.
CPT provides an excellent explanation of the sorts of things I will be doing on my trip,
" Delegates will meet with Palestinian and Israeli human rights representatives and peace workers in Jerusalem and Bethlehem. They will visit Palestinian families whose home and livelihoods are threatened by expanding Israeli settlements. They will travel to the city of Al Khalil (Hebron) and the village of At-Tuwani in the South Hebron Hills and experience firsthand CPT's work alongside Israeli and Palestinian partners. They will challenge the structural violence of the Occupation through nonviolent public witness."
I am so passionate about this issue, and I truly believe that I CAN make a difference. It happens so often in life that we become hopeless when we do not see immediate results. If we would only persevere, it is amazing what we can accomplish.
I firmly believe that peace can be found in Israel/Palestine, though it may not be in my own lifetime. However, without individuals working to establish relationships between members of every side of the conflict, and working to start conversations about the issue with everyone they meet, this peace will only move further away. I am fully aware of the dangers I may face, but I believe that on this issue I have been called to action. I would be SO grateful for any and all assistance I might receive for this trip, whether that be in well wishes, financial aid, or prayer. Thank you and God bless.
