As you know, I have been volunteering for almost 11 years with Camp Rap-A-Hope, a not-for-profit summer camp for children ages 7-17 who have or have had cancer. For the last 10 years, I have been a counselor and head counselor for Girls Cabin 2 (ages around 9-12), as well as a nurse in the MedShed. The MedShed is a hugely necessary part of camp, since most of these children, whether currently on treatment or not, continue to have many daily medications they must take to control the side effects of their cancer treatment. The MedShed is also necessary for the protection of those children who are in treatment and need frequent assessments to determine that they stay healthy while participating in things that “normal” kids do on a daily basis.
It costs $500 to send one child to camp; last year we had above 60 attend. We never want to turn a child away because we don’t have the money! While you may be unable to participate in person in this kind of volunteer activity due to family and work demands, I want to give you the opportunity to sponsor me in a Bacon Fun Run that will take place at camp this year. The goal is to help raise money to send these children to camp free of charge. It is my goal to raise at least $1000 to help support camp financially. Will you consider sponsoring me in this? Any donation you make is, of course, tax deductible and will go a long way to ensuring that we give EVERY child with cancer in the Gulf Coast area the chance to go to camp.
