THE STORY:

Tomorrow morning, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman is going to announce his decision regarding whether to bring criminal charges against the officers who shot and killed Jamar Clark. Regardless of the decision, this is a moment of great urgency and great meaning for our city, for people of faith, and for people of justice. It is a moment that calls for ongoing action, and for an infrastructure of liberation that cannot be postponed or denied. I have been collaborating with the Catholic Workers - an intentional, faith-based justice community - to help plan their annual Faith and Resistance Retreat here in Minneapolis in partnership with Black Lives Matter Minneapolis. This retreat will bring around 100 Catholic Workers to Minneapolis from April 9th - April 12th for four days of training, action, and spiritual reflection. Given the greater moment in our city, this retreat is quickly becoming a multi faith rallying point for people of faith to walk their call to justice alongside Black Lives Matter here in Minneapolis, with Unitarian Universalists and other faiths participating. One of the culminating events of the retreat will be a public multi-faith worship service, open to all on Tuesday, April 12 at noon. I have just learned that we have the opportunity to bring Rev. Osagyefu Sekou to Minneapolis to preach at the service on April 12th. His presence would be deeply meaningful to our community and a powerful call to both people of color and people of faith who are walking this path together. To bring Rev. Sekou to Minneapolis on April 12th, we need to raise $3000 by Friday, April 1. I am writing to all of you because you are folks to whom I am deeply connected who care about this work, and because you have access to multiple networks such as MARCH, BCUC, and the First Universalist Racial Justice team. Can you work with me to raise the money to bring Rev. Sekou to Minneapolis? This is a defining moment for our city, and our faith communities. This action and this worship service could be a powerful opportunity to come together at a critical time for our city, I hope you will accept this invitation to help bring Rev. Sekou here. I really believe that we can do this, if we can get 60 people to give $50, that will get Rev. Sekou here. Multifaith Worship Service Featuring Rev. Osagyefu Sekou Tuesday, April 12 at noon St. Olaf Catholic Church 215 S 8th St, Minneapolis, MN 55402 For those who don't know Rev. Sekou, I had the chance to meet and connect with him at General Assembly in 2015. About a week or so into the occupation at the 4th Precinct, after the white supremacist shooting, I invited him to Minneapolis asking for help and he came and facilitated trainings and offered strategy advice for our team. At my invitation he has agreed to come again to help with this faithful action, if we can help get him here.
