THE STORY:

BRING CHANGE 2 MIND wrote -

Our Mission

To end the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental illness.

What We Believe

In order to constructively have a conversation about mental illness, we need to first end the stigma associated with the subject. That requires we build awareness, understanding, and empathy within communities.

We don’t take sides, pass judgment, or seek to control the conversation. Our role is to start the conversation and amplify the voice of others - their experiences, their stories - to reduce people’s feeling of isolation.

We use our position as a trusted ally in the conversation about mental illness to act as a platform for other mental health resources and grow the movement.

We will seek to build broad awareness, and focus on opportunities to more deeply engage high-leverage groups like young people.

There’s a science to shifting beliefs and ending stigma. So we ground our work in the latest research and measure it for effectiveness.

We believe our work is not just about saving lives and reducing suffering, but also ensuring that people with mental illnesses are able to live up to their fullest potential.

What We Do

In 2010, the award-winning actress and activist Glenn Close co-founded the nonprofit organization Bring Change 2 Mind (BC2M) to start the conversation about mental health, and to raise awareness, understanding, and empathy. BC2M develops influential public service announcements (PSAs), is piloting evidence-based programs at the university and high school levels engaging students to reduce stigma and discrimination, and creates social movement around change by providing people with platforms to share, connect, and learn.

Why We Do It

Glenn Close understands that mental health is something that affects all families. Yet, because of harmful stigma and misunderstanding, few talk about it. After her sister, Jessie, received a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, and her nephew, Calen, was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, the Close Family decided to take action. In 2009, Jessie and Calen asked Glenn to use her platform to end the stigma surrounding mental illness. Her answer was, 'Yes, if you stand up there with me.' Together, they are using their voices to start the conversation and end the stigma around mental health.
