BENEFITING: CAMPAIGN EARTH
I have only see the Tar Sands through photos, but that has been enough to propel me into action when I am able. I do not believe in comparing wounds, any destructive and wasteful practice that harms our Earth and destroys the lives of her children is worthy of immediate and committed action. Yet I live in the Gulf of Mexico - South Louisiana - a world of wounds. We have fracking, climate and industrial induced land loss, refinery and chemical production facilities, leaky pipelines, toxic spills and releases, and more. Many of the people that I care about are ill, cancers are abundant, representation at the State and regional level has been bought and paid for by an industry that more often than not, puts their profit over our lives. As I write this MS and AL governors are considering tar sand mining in their states; and our ports, refineries, rail and waterways, are either already transporting and/or taking in the poison, or are quickly preparing to do so. Tar Sands Extraction is a two headed snake, there is no tail, only poison filled fangs at both ends. The very same toxins being extracted in Canada, causing death and illness to our relatives there, will be shipped and processed here, to end up in the lungs and bodies of the children of the Gulf Coast - my children included. A world of wounds must be healed. I want to go and walk for my children, and I want to take my daughter with me. Healing is a long process and I am finite, she and her siblings will carry this journey long after my body has returned to our Mother. But first we must remove the weapons used to assault us. If I am able to go, I will walk for the eradication of tar sands production, for healing, and for our children.
