THE STORY:

JACKSONVILLE HISTORIC NAVAL SHIP ASSOCIATION INC wrote -

Help Us BRING HOME THE ADAMS in 2015!

For the last seven years, the JHNSA has worked tirelessly to bring the former USS CHARLES F. ADAMS (DDG-2) back to Jacksonville as Florida’s first naval ship museum.  The ADAMS played a key role in our Navy’s history and was stationed in Mayport for 21 of her 30 years of service life. This ship will be a fitting memorial to honor all veterans, especially the Sailors who served on this special class of warship; will help educate our youth about STEM careers; and will contribute to the economic growth of Downtown Jacksonville.  We are in the final stage of acquiring the ship from the U.S. Navy but WE NEED YOUR HELP!  Please help us raise the needed funds to cover our operating and staff costs, so we can bring this important piece of history back to Jacksonville to share with our community and generations to come.

Mission Statement
To excite, inspire, educate and entertain the general public; to create a venue dedicated to the mission, memory and men of the Adams Class destroyers; and to distinguish and define the role of the Navy in securing and maintaining a free and safe world in which the United States stands as the vanguard for other countries to thrive.

History of Efforts to Save the USS CHARLES F. ADAMS (DDG-2)
The effort to save and preserve the former USS CHARLES F. ADAMS as a Naval ship museum began with the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum in 1997 when they began planning to berth the USS CHARLES F. ADAMS in Bay City, Michigan. When the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum decided to use another destroyer for their museum, former crewmen from the ADAMS class ships formed the ADAMS Class Veterans Association, Inc. (ACVA), in January of 2004. ACVA‘S efforts to find a home for this representative of the entire class of ships resulted in the current plan to berth the USS CHARLES F. ADAMS (DDG-2) in Jacksonville, Fla., the ship's home port for over 20 years. The Jacksonville Historic Naval Ship Association (JHNSA) was formed to carry out the mission to BRING HOME THE ADAMS!

I’m excited to continue my efforts to promote a great project that will drive tourists to the area. We’ve been happy to donate a temporary home for the Jacksonville Historic Naval Ship Association for the last five years at the landing. Let’s help them get into their new home at the Jacksonville Shipyards!” - Toney Sleiman, Sleiman Enterprises
