Irene's Photo

I am asking for help for my dear friend who is a single mother of four children, one of which is PETER. He is Irene's first born and has been in the hospital for over a year with many medical conditions.
On November 7, 2008, she was blessed with her first healthy, happy baby boy. During the first six months of his life, he experienced normal developmental progress. Mom and baby bonded through breastfeeding, he was cooing, rolling and he even almost sat up! Peter had a ready smile and was making eye contact. Everything was perfect.
As time went on, perfection turned to worry when one day a hernia appeared. Shortly after, in April of 2009, Peter's pediatrician recommended emergency surgery to repair the Inguinal Hernia . Believing this pediatrician had the child's best interest at heart, and under pressure to act quickly, Irene followed the recommendation. Peter made it through surgery but was left in a three week long coma.
One year later, after several appointments, Irene was informed by another pediatrician (a second opinion) that the surgery should not have been deemed an emergency.
The outcome of the operation had tragically rendered her son severely developmentally disabled. Peter made it through surgery but not unscathed. When he came out of the coma Peter had many new medical conditions that require medications. He stopped developing normally. He developed microcephaly, a condition of brain damage and began having seizures .
Now, at age five, he cannot sit, walk, talk, eat, speak or make eye contact. Peter can see and hear but his attempts at communication resemble those of an infant.
Peter still requires so many medical treatments and has a long road ahead of him. I am writing today as I feel that his quality of life could be so much more and he would be much happier around his mother and his siblings. Because Michael, Yana and Ivan are so young and due to costs to travel, they cannot visit with him when their mother does. Irene does her best to keep them connected by sharing photos of Peter and telling stories.
Then there's the "single mother" part of this. Irene stays home raising her young children and waiting by the phone for word from the hospital. Irene is in constant worry. Her bills are piling up; medical bills, utility bills, the family's home is in foreclosure and there's no vehicle to make travel easier. Irene has used public transportation, finds rides and finds childcare to visit her son, but there's no way to Irene to get herself out of this financial hole.
Please help Peter come home. Please bring a son home to his mother. A brother home to his two younger brothers and sister. Make this family whole again.
Thank you for reading. Please share this story and in PRAYERS FOR PETER!
