Bring Tania Home

Tania Ferreirinha is a fiercely passionate, loves to sing, and is a part of the LGBTQ+ community. For the last two and a half months, Tania has been stuck in Venezuela. Her parents, disapproving of her sexuality, sent her to Venezuela under false pretenses on November 3rd, 2013. While standing in the departure gate, she received a text from her father that contained a photo of her girlfriend Julia Campbell and a message that said: “Either this lesbian gets out of your life or I do.” She was under the impression that she would be returning to Canada in December with her mother, but despite continually asking when she will be returning home, her parents have refused to give her a return date. Tania is unable to facilitate her own return.

Tania is suffering. Caracas, Venezuela is considered one of the top 10 most violent and dangerous cities in the world. She is currently residing with family who refuse to tell her their exact address. Any attempt at raising money on her own has failed. Tania’s family refused to pay her for the work she did at their butcher shop – work that was done in unsanitary and unsafe conditions. For example, one of her coworkers (a man who is almost twice her age) continues to sexually assault and stalk her despite her efforts to refuse his advances. She cannot leave the house alone and has nowhere to seek refuge.

Tania was on the waiting list for Homewood Health Centre’s Eating Disorders Program (Guelph, Ontario). In Venezuela she does not have access to treatment. She is currently staying with family members that do not only disapprove of her lifestyle, but also think that weight loss and painful body sculpting massages are sufficient treatment for her mental illness.

Not only has Tania been unable to rely on her family for support, but they have actively exacerbated her illness and oppressed her life choices. They have stripped her of any agency that she had. With Random Acts’ help, we would like to bring Tania home. We would like to purchase a plane ticket from Caracas, Venezuela to Toronto, Ontario. Tania also requires shuttle transportation to the airport. Once back in Canada and no longer at the mercy of her repressive family, Tania will live with Julia and work towards her goal of studying music at The University of Western Ontario (London, Ontario).
