My name is Brit. I have absolutely no plan (please don't tell me yours), a recurring peptic ulcer that--quite frankly--I blame on Adele and there are more half-used bottles of shampoo under my sink than there are dollars in my student checking account (I graduated from grad school three years ago).
I love, and have always loved, things that don’t fit. Which is turning out to be super convenient since I fit into the adult world about as well as Vladimir Putin would fit in at your average 4-year-old’s backyard tea party.
I graduated from Santa Clara University’s Art History Department with a degree in “Bizarre, Relegated and Obscure Objects.” This ought to cover me for a lifetime membership in the weirdo club—I thought. I went on to write my master’s thesis at Sotheby’s Institute of Art on appraising “Uncommon Historical Objects.” My parents are very proud. They are, however, entirely unsure what to do with me—which I appreciate and totally understand.
After a solid decade of throwing away moldy Tupperware, not-so-confidently choosing how many tax exemptions to claim (I know the answer is either 1 or 17) and asking my fiancee (for the thousandth time) why we can’t have a puppy, I’d say with 92% confidence that I was better at being a 9-year-old than a late twenty-something.
While I commend those of my generation who drive around in cars that aren’t full of balled up receipts and shredded straw wrappers, I stand firmly with the not-quite-men-and-women who have been meaning to change that dead light bulb for six or twelve months, whose sinks are full of chipped wine glasses and week-old macaroni-and-cheese bowls and whose careers are idling along quite nicely.
So, that’s where we’re at. Any questions? Me too.
