Brittany and Greg started donating blood together when they began dating in their senior year of high school. Since the fall of 2002, Brittany and Greg have continued to donate blood almost every 56 days! Throughout college they made weelend "dates" to travel from their campuses and get together to give blood. Inspired by the donations of Brittany's father and uncle, Brittany and Greg have each already donated over 32 pints of blood as of the Fall 2013, enough to save over 100 lives! Please consider donating to the American Red Cross in honor of Brittany and Greg.
Little Kids Rock, Inc.
Shortly after closing on their new home in the spring of 2012, Brittany and Greg learned of the sudden passing of Greg's mother, Catherine Teitelbaum. During this difficult time, Greg and his family chose to honor Cathy's memory and her love of music with memorial donations to LIttle Kids Rock, Inc. Little Kids Rock, Inc. is dedicated to restoring and revitalizing music education in U.S. public schools. This organization brings free music instruction and instruments to under-served schools across the country. Through the generosity of friends and family, over $200.00 was raised in Cathy's honor. Please consider continuing to honor Catherine on our wedding day by contributing to Little Kids Rock, Inc. on behalf of Brittany and Greg.
Refugee Youth Project (RYP)
Brittany and Greg began working with the Refugee Youth Project in 2008. When mentor Brittany Powell first met Dina and Tiba, the two sisters had just arrived in Baltimore from the Congo. Four years later, Brittany was there to see Tiba attend her senior prom– one of many milestones they have shared together. I met Tiba earlier this summer and asked her what their relationship was like in the beginning of their match. Tiba laughed and said, “We couldn’t understand each other! But then she started teaching us English.”
At first, it was challenging for Brittany. It was difficult to create lessons and it was hard to know what she could do. She cut up magazines and made flashcards to help the girls study between her weekly visits. They made frequent trips to the library together, getting books, movies and library cards. All of these little steps, along with the girls’ participation in RYP after-school programs, helped them make enormous progress. Brittany says that it’s the little things that show you the biggest reward, like when she heard Dina and Tiba make a Family Guy joke at dinner for the first time. Now, Tiba will be attending CCBC Essex in the fall, while Dina will soon finish her GED at BCCC.For Brittany and Greg, it has been incredibly inspirational and rewarding to see the whole family become self-sufficient. Like many RYP mentors, Brittany’s efforts have surpassed our expectations of helping her mentees integrate and learn English. Recently, Brittany and her fiancé Greg have been helping Dina and Tiba’s parents navigate the home-buying process! Please consider donating to the Refugee Youth Project in honor of Brittany and Greg on their wedding day!
