David and Brittany Wedeking
Hello, and welcome to our fundraising page! :)
Well, many of you who know the two of us pretty well are probably looking at this fundraising page thinking a variety of things about us choosing to run a marathon. I still can't wrap my head around it either sometimes, and so far the farthest we've both run (as in, ever) is 7 miles. We decided to run a marathon together this year for multiple reasons, but ultimately we are choosing to support VanderCook College of Music through this experience because we believe in music education. If not for music, we wouldn't have met each other in the first place!
I (Brittany) knew that music was something I was passionate about early on and there wasn't really ever a doubt that I would do something with my life that incorporated sharing this passion with others. I settled on music education as a high school student and the rest is history. For David, participating in music was a hobby that he really enjoyed (and was really good at!). He liked being a part of band and chorus, but ultimately wanted a career in medicine. We met during our first year at Wartburg College while playing in the wind ensemble. Together we travelled to about a dozen different countries, met lifelong friends, and were inspired and shaped by the people that we met along the way. I don't need to go into a whole music advocacy speech because if you've ever been a part of any type of musical experience you know that it can be a very powerful thing - we both recognize the importance of music education as an important part of life!
By running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon as members of the VanderCook College of Music team, we are committed to raising money to help support future musicians as they complete their studies in music education. VanderCook is the ONLY independent American college that is solely dedicated to music education. Last summer, I completed my Masters in Music Education at VanderCook and really can't put into words how much I learned from and was inspired by my experiences there! I was able to study with top-notch professors and have relevent, hands-on experiences. My time spent studying at VanderCook greatly shaped the music educator that I am today and the experience that students have in my classroom. I believe that all people seeking to become educators deserve the very best educational experience, and I hope that you feel passionate about that as well.
Please consider contributing what you are able. Maybe that's $5 or maybe it is well wishes as we go through the miles and miles of training. Either way - THANK YOU!
See you at the finish line,
David and Brittany
