BENEFITING: SAINT BENEDICT CENTER-WEST
EVENT DATE: Apr 30, 2014
My name is J. Anthony McAlister. I have been a friend of the Brothers of Saint Benedict Center West for the past nine years. Like many of you, I was privileged to be able to know and love the recently departed Brother Leonard Mary, one of the earliest members of the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Bro. Leonard Mary was a giant of a man, an ardent and tireless evangelist whose love for our Lord and His Blessed Mother were inexhaustible, and whose apostolic work on behalf of our holy Church was indefatigable.
Much to our great sadness Brother was called home on November 23 following a lengthy illness and hospitalization. He was 92 years-old. Among the many spiritual legacies Brother leaves behind (including a book, Church of Salvation, and countless conversions) is the apostolic and evangelistic to which he devoted the bulk of his life. Brother’s base of operations for well over 20 years was the St. Joseph House of Studies in Monrovia, California, home to Saint Benedict Center West, which he established four years after his relocation from Still River, Massachusetts in 1981. Unfortunately, the owner of the building where St. Joseph’s House is located intends to the sell the property in the coming years and is therefore no longer able to extend current leases. This means that the two surviving Brothers at Saint Benedict Center West will be forced to find a new home effective May 1, 2014. This is where you come in.
As you can imagine, the expenses associated with any residential move can be high. The financial and human resources required to catalogue, pack, store, and transport the contents of St. Joseph’s House of Studies will be monumental. The Brothers will have the additional burden of finding and securing new housing in a new location, most likely rental property requiring a deposit, first/last month’s rent, etc. This puts an extraordinary burden upon a small and cash-strapped community.
They would never dream of making a request like this on their own behalf, which is why I and several other friends of Saint Benedict Center West have taken it upon us to organize this fundraiser on their behalf. WE NEED YOUR HELP! With the Christmas ‘shopping season’ having just concluded I know many of us may not be in a position to part with even more money, but if ever there was a worthy reason to dig a little deeper into our pockets this is it. Please consider making a donation to SBC West via this Crowdrise campaign. As the Center is a non-profit charitable organization recognized by the IRS (Tax ID 95-4131712) contributions to it are tax-deductible as allowed by law. And if you make a donation before midnight December 31, it can likely be written off on the tax returns we’ll all be filing in just a few months. Giving is easy – just click on the link up above and enter your credit or debit card information when prompted. Whether it’s $10 or $100 or $1,000, every little bit helps and will go towards helping ensure that the humble little missionary outpost established by Bro. Leonard Mary will be able to continue its good work. If you can, please consider making a donation today.
With warmest regards,
