THE STORY:

Greetings.

My name is Brooke Middleton. I am Climbing Out of Darkmess on June 21, 2014 at Riverwalk, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. We will walk the path along the Black Warrior River. Please, join me at 10:00 am. I am a survior of Postpartum Depression and Anxiety Disorder, which I suffered after the birth of my first child.

Climb Out of the Darkness is the annual awareness raising and fundraising event for Postpartum Progress, a nonprofit focused on supporting pregnant and new moms with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders like postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, postpartum OCD, postpartum psychosis and pregnancy depression.

Common Facts about Postpartum Depression:

• Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders like postpartum depression are temporary and treatable with professional help.

• 15-20% of all women will get a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder like postpartum depression or postpartum anxiety.  That’s 1 in every 7, more than the number of women who will get breast cancer.

•  While pregnancy and postpartum depression and anxiety are common, they aren’t normal. They are real illnesses that require treatment. Postpartum Progress is a national nonprofit that raises awareness of maternal mental health and provides support for pregnant and new moms struggling with it. It is a patient-run and patient-focused organization.

No matter what you do, we still call it your Climb, because it is a symbol of your climb out of the darkness of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, whether you are a long-time survivor or someone who is still climbing or someone who cares about the health of pregnant and new moms.

Help us raise money so that we can continue to raise awareness of how women are devastated by perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, make sure women know what they need to know about PPD, eliminate stigma and support the mamas who need it.

And now to get climbing!
