EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2011

Brooke Tanner

After gaining entry to the 2011 ING NYC Marathon, I decided to run in Honor of Sammy Gillott, an amazing boy who is going through the fight of his young life. I don't have the words to do this story justice, so I am pasting portions of a fundraising letter written by Sammy's Aunt, Ivy.

June 2011

Dear Friends,

Imagine if you could, what it is like to have your baby nephew die at 16 months old. That was my nephew, Benjamin. Then, Samuel was 20 months old when he was first diagnosed with the same cancer. Benjamin and Samuel are brothers. The most unbelievable thing is that there are only 3 other known cases in the world, of this occurring in siblings.

Benjamin and Samuel are my nephews. My sister, Lisa and my brother-in-law, Brian are their parents. They had to battle this again.

Fortunately, Sammy’s tumor had been completely removed. But he had to continue with treatment which included chemotherapy to make sure the tumor did not come back. Lisa, Brian and Sammy went to St. Jude Children’s Hospital for 10 months. While at St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Sammy was diagnosed with Fanconi Anemia which is a horrible and fatal genetic disorder which leads to cancer and leukemia.

Now it is 4 years later, and Sammy was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), the worst kind of leukemia. Sammy’s condition is severe and rare. There are only 2 surviving children with this combination of diseases.

Another pain staking battle this family must fight. Sammy is now 5 years old. Sammy had to stop kindergarten and leave with his parents to University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital for treatment. Sammy and his parents will have to be there for at least 4- 6 months worth of treatment.

Brian had to stop working to support his wife, Lisa and son, Sammy on this battle. The family has its home on Long Island and is asking for your help. Not only spiritually, through your love, positive energy and support, but financially.

We greatly appreciate any support you can.

Thank you,

Sammy’s Aunt Ivy
