DAY TO GO
Hi there! My name is Shannon Leyko, and I am NOT a runner. However, my mother was. She ran 6-7 miles every morning and multiple half marathons each year, not to mention triathlons sprinkled in there for good measure. In March 2012, my mother was diagnosed with bladder cancer, one of the most under-researched cancers out there. It's not hereditary and it's not commonly brought on by doing anything "wrong." It just happens. She passed away less than 6 months later, on September 3, 2012 at the age of 54.
This May 20th, I'm running the Brooklyn Half Marathon in her honor. The longest race I've ever run is 5 miles, so this will be a doozy. But obviously it's in my blood to run...somewhere. Not only do I want to honor my mom by doing what she loved most, but also desperately want to support research for bladder cancer treatments and preventions. No one should have to face what my mother went through, and what my family and I continue to go through as we grieve her loss for the rest of our lives.
Please help support my cause by donating $10, $20, $100, or $1M...whatever your heart desires and your pockets can handle! Let's kick cancer's butt, shall we? I promise to run my fastest, even if that means finishing as they pick up the course cones right behind me.
