November 27, 2014 - UPDATE
IT'S Showtime! Race Day is finally here. Proof pictures are posted here, including pre-race, mid-race and finish line. My goal was to finish under 40 minutes and I came in at 37:45. No records are in danger but it means a lot to me. One picture also show another LCTCS employee, John Nichols, who walked the couse with his wife. GO TEAM LCTCS!
I want to thank all who contributed to the March of Dimes in support of my run this morning (and all who said they would contribute if I completed it - you know who you are in Monroe, LA). I especially want to thank those who came out to support me - my wife, my daughter, my grandkids and my daughter-in-law's wonderful aunt and uncle. I most especially thank my son and daughter-in-law who actually ran the race with me. Doing it together really made a difference.
The picture I am most proud of is the last one with the side-by-side of my daughter and me. On the left, I stood on the sidelines and cheered her on in the 2008 Turkey Trot 5K. On the right, she cheered me on in 2014.
October 13, 2014
Almost one year ago, in November, 2013, my family rented a house for a weekend getaway to celebrate my 60th birthday. Here I am with my favorite little girl performing my favorite activity - weight 276 pounds, asleep in a hammock.
The second picture is of me today, October 13, 2014 with my same favorite little girl, but now only 207 pounds on my way down to 200, maybe even 195. But wait! There's more. I am training to run my first 5k - The 2014 La March of Dimes Turkey Trot in downtown Baton Rouge on Thanksgiving Day morning.
Now I know that some of you could run 5k without breaking a sweat. I won't lie to you. My favorite activity still involves the hammock. But my Dad died at age 60 and never got to meet most of his grandkids. I am now almost 61 and I want to live to see that little girl and her little brother graduate from college and maybe even meet my great-grandkids. I decided that something had to change.
I started my diet in January, 2014 and seeing some progress, I decided in March to train for a 5K (after being challenged by my daughter-in-law) . I picked November as my target date because I knew the March of Dimes sponsored this event and it is a wonderful cause. Back then it was almost 300 days away. Now its only 45 days away. It's crunch time.
The March of Dimes has been holding its annual Turkey Trot in Baton Rouge for 28 years. This is my first run in an event of any kind since PE class in high school and I am going to need your support to get to the finish line. Creating this event and getting you to contribute holds me accountable. Please give what you can.
