THE STORY:

After attending a private school for nearly eight years, a bubble forms around you. A bubble of safety, protection, routine but also requiescence. Being a part of a Rustic Pathway expedition means popping the bubble to become a constituent of a community that makes room for others and shares stories, values, and culture. Rustic Pathways is a leader in providing international community service programs for high school students. Their programs introduce students to a variety of service experiences that benefit the communities they visit, while showing students the impact they can have on the world. They teach those who travel with them about their role in the global community, the power they have to affect change, and the benefits of diversity and cultural awareness. Additionally, these experiences help build critical teamwork skills while challenging students to take leadership roles in creating change. This summer I was accepted to participate in the BriBrí Village Service Experience where I will interact and share culture with Costa Rica’s largest indigenous group. The BriBrí community has lived in the hills and valleys of the Talamanca region for hundreds of years in Costa Rica. I will stay in tents in the village and work with community members on small-scale development projects. I can only imagine the special bond I will be able to make with the Costa Ricans through a personal connection that can only be made through the Spanish language. Lending a compassionate hand is everything I look forward to because simply put, Compassion = Empathy + Action, or in the words of Thich Nhat Hanh, “Compassion is a verb.” I want to work with people who may have different political affiliations, religious beliefs, gender, race, or sexuality but have one commonality: the yearning to serve others with the bottom of their hearts. Scripture says, “For I was hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me.…Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” (Matthew 25:35–36, 40.) With your help and donation, I hope to fulfill these words and to experience the true essence of charity this summer: giving my all without the expectation of receiving anything in return. With much love, Bryant Caballero
