BENEFITING: CODYS CREW FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: Oct 10, 2014
The plan is to cover (on foot) the 184 miles of the C&O Canal from Cumberland Md to Washington DC in < 72 hours. Each step should benefit the Cody's Crew Foundation -- a local, not for profit, grass roots, awesome organization. Cody's Crew is fighting to raise awareness neuroblastoma with the end goal to one day end the nasty beast.
A brief history of why I run. It all began after helping the amazing Antoinette Landragin to complete the 2013 Tom’s Run Relay as a solo runner [http://tomsrunrelay.org]. My role was to bike escort her through the night for about 65 of the total 208 miles. After witnessing this amazing accomplishment, I realized there is no reason why I could not begin running again.
So when I started last year my weight was 245 pounds. I had to begin slowly. Using my heart rate to regulate my speed, I simply shuffled and shuffled one mile at first then two and then three. As you review my running experiences below you’ll notice I’ve never gone more than 50K (31.2 miles). My attempt at this C&O Canal Run is potentially 184.5 miles. I’ve tentatively scheduled 10 October to begin my 72hr challenge. This is a personal challenge and not an organized race. Hopefully my attempt to run/walk the entire C&O canal will also successfully raise funds for the Cody’s Crew Foundation.
I am requesting pledges for donations. For examples - $1/mile, $1/hour on trial, $1 for every 5 miles…basically anything you can think of will work to make this a successfully fundraiser. Last year, I did this sort of fundraiser twice. In September 2013 at the Cody’s Crew 5K I was able to present a $424 dollar donation and then in February, after my first Ultra, another $450 dollars.
The donations given to Cody’s Crew Foundation are used to help fund cancer research. Specifically, Neuroblastoma is a form of cancer, found primarily in children, that attacks the developing nerve cells. There currently is no Federal Funds used to support childhood neuroblastoma. Friends and family members of the children suffering from this cancer raise most of the research money.
